Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) affects approximately 1 in 200 children and adolescents, making it crucial to provide tailored resources for this demographic. Despite the existence of Evidence-Based Exposure Therapy for OCD, which has been an effective treatment for years, there remains a notable scarcity of books specifically designed for young children with OCD.
Moreover, many of the books available for young children with OCD rely on a limited set of characters or non-human characters. One, Two, What Do I Do? lets children follow five distinct human characters from a diversity of backgrounds and facing a variety of symptoms. It is our hope that this fills a pressing need for more diverse and inclusive books that accurately depict the experiences of young children with OCD.
While not a substitute for professional diagnosis or treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, this book can serve as a helpful companion for young children with OCD and their families. This book may also be helpful for older children with OCD and other conditions such as ADHD or learning disabilities that make understanding more complex companion books challenging. Children who are currently in treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and those that have recently completed treatment may especially enjoy One, Two, What Do I Do? as an enjoyable reminder of the skills they are learning.
For treatment providers, One, Two, What Can I Do? can aid the psychoeducation process and provide essential modeling for young children entering treatment. The text of One, Two, What Do I Do? can also be helpful to introduce terms and strategies commonly used in exposure therapy including “Worry Monster”, “Do something different,” and “Do what OCD can’t do.” Mental health treatment providers are also encouraged to Contact Us for a discount on orders of 15 books or more.
Drs. Megan Barthle-Herrera and Amanda Marie Balkhi completed their doctoral training in Psychology from the University of Florida. While there, Drs. Balkhi and Barthle-Herrera developed a deep appreciation for the children and families impacted by Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Today, Dr. Barthle-Herrera is a professor within the OCD, Anxiety, and Related Disorders psychology clinic in the University of Florida Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Program while Dr. Balkhi is the Executive Director of the Balkhi Foundation. Together they hope to make treatment for childhood OCD a little bit easier for young children and their families.
